 A Squirrel Poem

Winning poem from NPI/ Red Alert poetry competition 2001

Our Rusty

If you go quietly into the wood

You might see our Rusty looking for food

Hazel nuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds

Placed in a feeder supplement his needs

From a special hopper, Red Alert approved

Rusty feeds safely, and grey's are removed

Watch him in silence, he’ll let you observe

This timorous creature, we need to conserve

With grey squirrels approaching the reds border line

Our native red squirrel, is fast in decline

As an endangered species, he needs conservation

So join a support group, or make a donation

Report any sightings if you see a grey

To Red Alert North West , and help keep them at bay

The Squirrel

If you look into the trees, you might find a drey,

What squirrel will you find a red or a grey?

One thing that's for certain, if it's a grey that you find,

You won't see reds for much longer, they will be left behind.

The grey takes the trees over, it likes to be alone,

Bullies the red, drives it out of it's home.

Takes the reds food, invades the stored winter store,

Our own native red's can find no open door.

We have to act now and protect our own cute red,

If we don't help out now, they will all end up dead.

There are areas in England where the red can be found,

But as yet the greys havent reached this safe ground.

Think about what I'm saying, and you will realise it's true,

Where you see the grey squirrels you don't see reds there do you?

We can help save red squirrels, you don't have to do much,

Maybe make a donation to a "save the red squirrel trust.

Red squirrels are small, they move high in the trees,

On thin spindly branches, that sway in the breeze.

Their fir glows in the sun, they are shy, very sweet,

From the tufts on their ears, to their tiny red feet.

A bushy red tail you will see bobbing behind

As they look in the trees for any food they can find

If your very fortunate and see a red squirrel around,

Thank your lucky stars that they can still be found.

The grey squirrel is bigger, and does not act so shy,

Will take food from the garden, and can be quite sly.

Will take all that is offered, so other animals cannot feed,

There was enough for them all, it is just pure greed.

The grey is sometimes named as the tree rat,

In wildlife terms it is no better than a cat.

The greys find the food, that reds have collected to survive,

If they take it in the winter, then reds are no longer alive.

A phone number is available to report what you see,

Food can be put out for reds, high up in a tree.

If we know where they are we can help reds survive,

Drive the greys out, keep our red squirrels alive.

The survival of red squirrels now rests with man,

Lets all get together and do all that we can.
